Can’t remember since when Shanghainese became a unfavorable symbol among all other Chinese. Shanghainese are not the richest people in Mainland China, nor the culture leader. But suddenly you’ll find newspaper is saying “In Lujiazui (the finance center in Shanghai like Wall Street) if you speak Shanghainese, you are illiterate”. And you’ll find some Hong Kong based furniture company’s Shanghai branch promulgates company regulation that “speaking Shanghainese in office hours will be fined of RMB 50”. When browsing the Internet, you will be surprised that so many posts are attacking Shanghai.
What’s wrong? Who’s fault? Many of those attackers have never been to Shanghai. What they say is what other people say about Shanghai. And in their eyes, Shanghai is a hell. Shanghainese are miserly. They worship things foreign and fawn on foreign countries. Shanghainese are spineless. In Shanghai, such a International Megacity, those Shanghainese would rather speak their stupid language than Mandarin. Without us, Shanghai is just a fishing village. Where is your pride from?
In Shanghai, you can find outlanders anywhere who’s making money on one hand and badmouthing Shanghai on the other hand. But ironically, all of them are shooting their last bolt to stay in the “hell”. Perhaps, after they screw up everything and go back to their hometown, they will tell people around them “I’ve been to Shanghai. Shanghai is a hell”. When a Shanghainese going out of the city, the best compliment they will receive is “You’re not like Shanghainese”.
If you want to be a part of the city, you must love the city. The phenomenon is just on the contrary. They are trying to be conquerors. In China, regional conflict has become more and more acrimonious these days. So let me throw a question on the table. As an American, do you hate New Yorkers?
